Today, Western Academy celebrated birds. The fifth graders, who have been studying birds and birdwatching all year, showcased their individual projects to the entire student body. Projects were ranked, with third, second, and first place winners receiving John James Audubon's "Birds of America" books. Following my presentation on bird conservation from the era of Audubon and Wilson, the students met three education ambassadors and listened to Audubon's journal entries about each species. Then, it was time to admire the impressive projects. I was thoroughly impressed by their work and knowledge of the birds they focused on. Well done, Western Academy! This marks the 14th year that the fifth graders have been immersed in the world of birds.
The project that won focused on the Osprey. The student involved in this project observed the wintering Osprey along White Oak Bayou. He captured

photos and recorded their success in diving for fish. He presented a photo album alongside his trifold and delivered an outstanding presentation on the Osprey to the audience today. A total of 40 projects were involved.
