April Showers Bring May Flowers and Birds

Spring Rains have been a welcome change to the drought conditions that have become all too familiar in the area. Fresh water is critical for our feathered friends, especially during migration. A recent visitor took advantage of our pond. Amongst the Northern Cardinals that enjoy an afternoon bath on the water’s edge, we spotted a Northern Waterthrush. This small, well-camouflaged bird bobbed along the shoreline in search of small aquatic insects. They winter in Central and South America and breed in Canada, Alaska, and the northeastern United States

. We are grateful to be able to provide a rest stop for them this spring. In addition to the waterthrush, the pond has attracted several pairs of Wood Ducks that visit in the evening, and the family of Great Blue Herons that are nesting in the tall pines across the street are enjoying catching perch for their growing fledglings.
