Our last summer library program was held at University Branch in Sugar Land. We had a wonderful crowd of people who came out to learn all about raptors and check out bird- and raptor-themed books from the library. We would like to thank all the great librarians from Houston, Harris County, Fort Bend County and Crosby that invited Wild Bird Adventures out this summer in support of literacy and bird conservation education.
We have two public programs quickly approaching that we invite everyone to attend. First, this Saturday at 9AM we will be at Willow Fork Park in Katy giving an owl presentation. Willow Fork Park was opened in 2016. The passive-use park provides residents with a high-quality recreational environment, transforming 32 acres of flat land into a multipurpose space with compelling topographical undulations, multipurpose open lawns, paved trails, a lake, and more than 15 species of trees.
In 2019, Friends of Willow Fork Park spearheaded the opening of a butterfly garden with more than 60 plants of 25 different species and six different native prairie grasses. A list of trees and plants is available on their website to download. The site has been certified and registered by Monarch Watch as an official Monarch Waystation, providing milkweeds, nectar sources and shelter needed to sustain monarch butterflies as they migrate through North America. Real-time viewing of bird activity at the park has also been added and can be accessed through the park’s live bird cam. https://www.willowforkdrainagedistrict.com/parks-trails/willow-fork-park/
On September 13th we will once again be at Kleb Woods Nature Preserve for their annual hummingbird festival. Come early! The gates open at 9AM and there will be lots of activities for all ages including visiting with the raptor ambassadors. Bring your camera to catch all the raptor and hummingbird action!
Celebrate hummingbird migration with games and activities for the whole family. View hummingbird banding by licensed banders, enjoy live raptors with WildBird Adventures, take a guided nature walk with Heartwood Master Naturalists, tour the 1896 Kleb house with a Precinct 4 Naturalist, and more! For questions, email klebwoods@hcp4.net or call 281-357-5324.
