Here in southeast Texas, everyone is eagerly awaiting relief from the intense heat and dry weather that has persisted for the past two months. The soaring temperatures, reaching nearly 100 degrees in October, are almost unbearable. With the promise of cooler weather and rain in the upcoming forecasts, we can soon embrace the autumn season with "pumpkin spice" and welcome new bird species to our yards. The north winds will bring migratory birds of various sizes to our area, with some choosing to settle down while others only pass through on their way to warmer climates. Given the current drought conditions, it is crucial to provide a water source for our feathered friends.
If you're curious about the innovative technologies that scientists are using to track bird migration, visit BirdCast and input your county in the search bar. Last night, 659,000 birds flew over Waller County. At Wild Bird Adventures, we are delighted to observe Wilson's Warblers and Nashville Warblers near our pond, along with House Wrens and sapsuckers on our property. BirdCast offers radar-based data on nocturnal bird migration at the county and state levels across the contiguous U.S.
In addition to welcoming our avian travelers we hope you will join us for our first Awesome Autumn Avian Open House on October 27th at 1PM. You will enjoy meet and greets with the raptors, photo ops with the owls, crafts, bird displays, a silent auction, bird merch for sale, scavenger hunt and more. The event is free and open to everyone! So be like a bird and migrate on over for a visit.
